What's wrong with the word "we"

One of my jobs is to work as a developmental editor for SAPIENS, helping anthropologists to write insightful, readable essays about their work for a general audience. The editorial team decided to publish some pieces about some behind-the-scenes discussions we have about editorial policies, including why we capitalize Indigenous when referring to people, why we don't publish photos of fossilized modern human remains, and more. (See the evolving series here: https://www.sapiens.org/kicker/ask-sapiens/)

Here's my contribution: why "we" often edit out the word "we" from our essays.

The piece takes a particular resonance now, as protests rage against the recent appalling killing of George Floyd by American police. It's a stark reminder of the particular onus on journalists and editors to include, in our works, the voices of those who are not always heard.
