One of the best ways to harness energy from the wind is, apparently, to fly a kite. Here's my feature for Yale Environment 360.

The white wind turbines that now dot skylines and fields around the world have done wonders for wind energy: prices have dropped dramatically, and wind is set to be one of the Big Two (along with solar) for electricity generation by 2050. But some argue that the best spots for traditional wind farms are running out; there's more wind higher up than can be reached by even the tallest towers; and turbines can be expensive or logistically impossible to install in spots like deep waters or remote locations. So: go up!
The first commercial system is now in operation, launched in Mauritius in Dec 2021. Expect more to come.
